Hometown Variety & Crafts/Sherry's Cards & Gifts was opened by Jim Guthman in 1979 as a Ben Franklin store. Located in the heart of downtown Hastings, Ben Franklin was the destination for everything for the home-fabrics, crafts, home decor, and custom framing.
After several great years at that location, Jim added a new store, Sherry's Cards and Gifts, to the mix. Located in an adjacent building, Sherry's became the premier store in Hastings for cards, home decor, and collectibles.
Over the last few years, downtown Hastings has begun a resurgence, adding new shops and restaurants, and developed into one of the best downtown areas in the midwest. With those changes, Hometown Variety and Sherrys Cards & Gifts moved 2 blocks east to the Stein Brothers building, one of the oldest buildings in downtown hastings. Considered one of the premier buildings in Hastings, the Stein building that once housed Montgomery Ward and the Stein Bros store has become a great home to both stores.
